The Citadel

The Widow of the South
by Robert Hicks
Set during the Civil War, a young woman loses her husband but gains a vocation when she becomes the caretaker of the military cemetery established on her land. It’s based on a true family story and is a first novel by this author. If you like genealogy, family history, or the history of the Civil War you should enjoy this.

They Died in Vain: Overlooked, Underappreciated and Forgotten Mystery Novels

A fun read to browse through short synopses and reviews of mystery books. You get an idea about each book without anything being given away. The library owns over half of the titles discussed and most of the authors. A good way to get ideas for your next mystery read!

Dating Dead Men
by Harley Jane Kozak
This engaging premiere novel by a native Lincolnite who’s successfully entered the Hollywood scene is a fun read. With a frenzied pace, readers follow the adventures of heroine Wollie Shelley as she juggles a blind-dating project, the promotion of the greeting card store she manages, and her eccentric relatives. Things get even crazier when she gets involved in a bizarre murder plot, which may or may not involve her institutionalized brother, but which most definitely involves the hunky mystery man who keeps popping up to pull her out of dangerous situations. Or…is that to put her into those situations? A fun, fast read filled with likeable characters.

I was sorry to see this book end. It was wonderful to feel that I was so close to these folks, their joys and sorrows. If you like Thornton Wilder, if you like to read about the daily life of ordinary people, their struggles and triumphs, you’ll like this wonderfully written book!

Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia

For some reason, possibly the weather, a fair number of Brits move each year to warmer climates on the continent. Chris Stewart was no exception. Having experienced a number of different occupations, including rock group drummer, sailor, and sheep shearer, he was ready to take on the mountains of Andalucia in southern Spain. However, the wily peasants and their local customs brought various challenges to this new life style. Getting rid of Pedro, the previous owner of their house, proved to be extremely tricky. If you want to know where the title of the book came from you’ll find out in the very first pages of the book.

Sophie’s Choice
by William Styron
Beautiful, sad story. The book is even more powerful than the movie. I was sad when it ended!

Stone Cold
based on the novel by Robert B. Parker (DVD Parker)
Gritty, atmospheric and filled with great performances, this TV-movie adaptation of Parker’s novel trims the story somewhat but is stilly highly watchable. For anyone who’s still got Selleck’s performance as Thomas Magnum stuck in their head, this is a fine, multi-layered portrayal of author Parker’s newest series character. Additional adaptations of other books in the Jesse Stone series are planned.
