Looking back over the 100+ books I’ve read in 2021, a big portion of them were mysteries, because of my involvement with Just Desserts. Of those, I may have given higher scores to other titles on my LibraryThing account immediately after reading them, but the following novels stuck with me in my memory as being particularly noteworthy: “The Magpie Murders” by Anthony Horowitz, which we read for the group discussion, remains one of my favorite of Horowitz, who is one of my current favorite authors; “The Eighth Detetective” by Alex Pavesi played around with the typical conventions of the mystery genre in intriguing ways — I’ll be interested to see what else this author does; “Later” by Stephen King was a terrific fusing of pulp detective fiction and King’s archetypal paranormal stories — I really loved this as an audiobook; and “Devil in a Blue Dress”, the first of Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins series was tremendous, and makes me look forward to gradually reading the rest of that series.
