What was your favorite Mystery/Suspense/Thriller read in 2021?

Hey, mystery fans and members of the libraries’ Just Desserts mystery fiction discussion group…

We’re in the final week of 2021, and we’re curious — what was your favorite Mystery/Suspense/Thriller read in 2021?

It doesn’t have to have been a “new” release this year, it could just be an older comfort read. But what Mystery or Suspense or Thriller stood out the most for you among all the books you read (or listened to) this past year? Bonus points if it was one of our Just Desserts reading selections!

Leave a comment here, in response to this Just Desserts Blog post, with your favorite genre read in 2021…

i’m a big fan of vintage mysteries, but i took a chance on richard osman’s “the thursday murder club” and loved it! i went on to read the 2nd one in the series, “the man who died twice” to see if osman’s writing was consistently interesting, and it was.

Looking back over the 100+ books I’ve read in 2021, a big portion of them were mysteries, because of my involvement with Just Desserts. Of those, I may have given higher scores to other titles on my LibraryThing account immediately after reading them, but the following novels stuck with me in my memory as being particularly noteworthy: “The Magpie Murders” by Anthony Horowitz, which we read for the group discussion, remains one of my favorite of Horowitz, who is one of my current favorite authors; “The Eighth Detetective” by Alex Pavesi played around with the typical conventions of the mystery genre in intriguing ways — I’ll be interested to see what else this author does; “Later” by Stephen King was a terrific fusing of pulp detective fiction and King’s archetypal paranormal stories — I really loved this as an audiobook; and “Devil in a Blue Dress”, the first of Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins series was tremendous, and makes me look forward to gradually reading the rest of that series.

I read 204 books last year. The one that I stayed up WAY TOO LATE to finish was _Falling_ by T J Newman. I also enjoyed the Robin Lockwood series by Philip Margolin. And for cozier mysteries I’ve read the first 8 of the Mrs Jeffries series by Emily Brightwell, and those were good too.

My favorite mystery read in 2021 was Eight Perfect Murders by Peter Swanson. Loved the nods to the mystery classics. Couldn’t put it down.

Thanks to this group, I’ve found s-o-o-o many great new choices! Although I loved all the titles mentioned above, I think Tana French’s The Searcher was my favorite mystery book last year.
