What was your favorite mystery novel of 2022?

Hey, mystery fans and members of the libraries’ Just Desserts mystery fiction discussion group…

We’re in the final few days of 2022, and we’re curious — what was your favorite Mystery/Suspense/Thriller read in 2022?

It doesn’t have to have been a “new” release this year, it could just be an older comfort read. But what Mystery or Suspense or Thriller stood out the most for you among all the books you read (or listened to) this past year?

Bonus points if it was one of our Just Desserts reading selections!

    While I didn’t have one stand-out favorite, I sure enjoyed the releases by Richard Osman. I’m a fan of his standup and presenter appearances, and his books about the Thursday Murder Club did not disappoint! I also enjoyed and would recommend the Susan Ryeland series by Anthony Horowitz, even though the PBS series tried its best to ruin people’s interest in the books. (Kidding/not kidding.) Those books are written in a very clever format and live up to Horowitz’s reputation as an accessible storyteller.

    My favorite book was Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak. This novel is a mixture of the mystery, horror and paranormal genres. Mallory Quinn is hired as a live-in nanny for five-year-old Teddy in this page-turner. The bond that she creates with Teddy feels real. Teddy’s drawings (included in the book) create a very creepy feel. There are a number of jaw-dropping twists and turns in this novel. I normally avoid books with paranormal and horror elements but these elements are skillfully woven into the novel.

    Two of my favorites this year were The Floating Girls by Lo Patrick and The Librarian by Madeline Martin.

    All 3 of “The Thursday Murder Club” series by Richard Osman. Well-written (rare for a modern “cozy”), believable and surprisingly heartwarming.

    I’ll give three answers. (1) My favorite book we actually read for Just Desserts, specifically, was actually a tie between “The Maid” by Nita Prose and the second Camino novel by John Grisham, “Camino Winds”. Both excellent for different reasons, and I’d still enjoy seeing another Camino novel from Grisham. (2) My favorite mystery/suspense/thrillers I read outside of Just Desserts were “Fortune Favors the Dead” and “Murder Under Her Skin” by Stephen Spotswood, featuring an exciting new pair of sleuths in Lillian Pentecost and Will(ow) Parker. Aw, dang, I actually read those for the Just Desserts “series share” back in May, too. Oh, well…I’m excited that the third volume in this series just came out and I’m on the holds list for it! (3) An honorable mention goes to the audiobook adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” read by Poirot actor David Suchet. One of my all-time favorite mystery novels, and his voice adds still new layers to it — and helps me prepare to portray Poirot myself in a stage adaptation of that story in February for the Community Players Theatre down in Beatrice.

    I loved Iron Lake by William Kent Krueger and I also started the Maggie Hope series by Susan Elia MacNeal and enjoyed her series very much. I love historical fiction especially WWI and WWII. I also loved The Maid that we read for this group, so much that my OLLI bookclub read it too!
