What was your favorite Mystery/Thriller/Suspense novel you read in 2023?

Hey, mystery fans and members of the libraries’ Just Desserts mystery fiction discussion group…

We’re on the final day of 2023, and we’re curious — what was your favorite Mystery/Suspense/Thriller that you read in 2023?

It doesn’t have to have been a “new” release this year, it could just be an older comfort read. But what Mystery or Suspense or Thriller novel stood out the most for you among all the books you read (or listened to) this past year?

Bonus Question: What was your favorite title among those we read specifically for a Just Desserts discussion! (see archive of past Just Desserts titles at this link!)

    My favorite book was The Lie Maker by Linwood Barclay. It is a stand alone about an author who writes back stories for people entering the witness protection program.

    My favorite Just Desserts assignment was All Good People Here by Ashley Flowers. Why? I like novels that have a cold case element.

    I discovered Joy Ellis this year and happily became acquainted with Nikki Galena, Rowan Jackman and Matt Ballard. Wonderful atmosphere and local color. Of course, the fens of Lincolnshire have more crime and serial killers than exist in a thousand years of London history, but that’s no surprise to readers of English country mysteries.

    My favorites were Daisy Darker and All Good People Here. Both books had twisty plots with surprise endings. I love that kind of book and both of these fit the bill. However, we read so many good books this year it was hard to choose.

    Sci Fi Murder Mysteries–interesting new genre to explore!

    Also, enjoyed being asked to read Mignon Eberhart, an author I likely would have never read; also enjoyed the lecture about the author and her work.

    Finally, I really enjoy hearing the commentary from other mystery fans.

    I read a lot of Ruth Ware this year. My favorite was probably “the Lying Game”.

    I think the mystery/suspense/thriller I enjoyed reading the most in 2023 was probably the third in the Pentacost & Parker series by Stephen Spotswood, “Secrets Typed in Blood”, which I read right at the end of the year. As much as I enjoyed “The River We Remember” by William Kent Krueger, it felt more like general fiction than a true mystery, though there were certainly strong mystery elements.

    As to my favorite among the titles we actually read for Just Desserts discussion, that was quite easily “Killers of a Certain Age” by Deanna Raybourn, and I look forward to (hopefully) more from those characters in the future.
