Adult Storytime Readings at Gere Branch – Summer 2022
Gere Branch Library, June 22nd and July 13th, 2022
presented by various staff from various branch libraries
In the Summer of 2022, the Gere Branch Library launched a new type of literary event — “Storytime” for Adults — in which staff from various library locations read aloud from some of their favorite books — poems, short stories, essays, scenes from plays, even children’s picture books. The following are lists of the titles of books from which these readings were given.

Becky W.C. from the Walt Branch Library, and her husband Scott C. from the Bennett Martin Public Library downtown, performed a two-person scene from this classic 1936 Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play, You Can’t Take It With You.

Midpoint Activity: Monica K. led the group through a light stretching exercise that could be done from everyone’s chairs.
The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom

Monica K., from the Gere Branch, read a selection from this volume of spiritual psychology.
When Women Were Dragons
by Kelly Regan Barnhill (Barnhill)
Lane G., from the Gere Branch, shared a slideshow and read a selection from this new novel.
The Gallery of Regrettable Foods
by James Lileks (641.5 Lil)
Scott C., from the Bennett Martin Public Library downtown, shared a slideshow and read selections from this humorous volume poking fun at the horribly unappetizing illustrations in 1950s and 1960s cookbooks and food pamphlets. Scott recommended Lileks’ other titles, as well: Gastroanomalies: Questionable Culinary Creations From the Golden Age of American Cookery, Interior Desecrations: Hideous Homes From the Horrible 70s, and Mommy Knows Worst: Highlights From the Golden Age of Bad Parenting Advice (this last one isn’t in the libraries’ collection).

Midpoint Activitiy: A series of mood slides were shared, featuring quotes from a book which host Lane G. recommended, called The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, by John Koenig.
Bradbury Stories: 100 of his Most Celebrated Tales

Scott C., from the Bennett Martin Public Library downtown, read the complete short story “The Laurel and Hardy Love Affair”, included in this collection, as well as in the collection The Toynbee Convector.
